WEIR for Mayor

Building Community Engagement
Through Digital Communications

2026 Municipal Election |
Rideau Lakes, Ontario

How do you build awareness, encourage community participation and keep residents informed during a municipal election campaign without spending money on Facebook advertising?

As communications manager for my brother Steve Weir's 2026 mayoral campaign in Rideau Lakes, I developed a digital strategy built around original photography, community storytelling and timely election information.

Through WeirView Media, I managed the campaign's digital communications, creating content designed to build awareness, connect with residents and encourage community engagement, without paid advertising.

  • 240,120 organic Facebook views

  • 29,633 viewers

  • 5,100 content interactions

  • 845 link clicks

THE RESULTS & TAKEAWAYS

The “WEIR for Mayor” campaign demonstrated how consistent messaging, compelling photography and community-focused storytelling can generate substantial digital engagement without paid Facebook advertising.

Over the reporting period of Aug. 21 to Nov. 2, 2026, the campaign recorded more than 240,000 organic Facebook views, with its strongest-performing content featuring personal stories, family photographs and campaign milestones.

The experience reinforced three important principles:

  • Authenticity builds connections. Personal photographs and genuine stories helped give the campaign a recognizable voice.

  • Consistency matters. Regular updates kept campaign information visible and accessible throughout the election.

  • Good communications are measurable. Tracking views, interactions and audience activity provided valuable insight into which content attracted attention.

BEYOND THE CAMPAIGN

The same skills — strategic planning, clear messaging, original photography, digital content management and performance analysis — are applicable to businesses, tourism organizations and municipal communications.

For WeirView Media, this project brought those services together in one comprehensive communications campaign.

This case study documents communications work undertaken for a political candidate. It is not an endorsement by the Township of Rideau Lakes or an example of official municipal government communications.

THE STRATEGY

The “WEIR for Mayor” campaign focused on building an authentic connection with Rideau Lakes residents through consistent, engaging digital communications.

Rather than relying on paid advertising, I developed a content strategy that combined candidate introductions, original photography, community-focused messaging and timely election updates.

My work included:

  • Digital communications: Managing campaign messaging and Facebook content throughout the election.

  • Photography and storytelling: Creating original visuals and sharing the people, places and experiences behind the candidate.

  • Community engagement: Encouraging conversations, responding to questions and keeping residents informed.

  • Campaign branding: Developing a consistent visual identity across digital content and campaign materials.

  • Performance monitoring: Tracking audience engagement and adjusting content based on what resonated with followers.
